Lesson 4

Speed, distance and braking

Why safe speed depends on weather, visibility, road condition and traffic, not only on signs.

Speed, distance and braking

The permitted speed is not always safe. In rain, fog, darkness or dense traffic, a driver reduces speed in advance.

Safe following distance gives time to see danger, decide and brake without a collision.

The worse the road surface, tires, visibility or driver condition, the more margin is needed. This is the difference between smooth stopping and emergency action.

In practice we train smooth braking, predicting other drivers and avoiding harsh reactions.

How we train this in class
  • break the rule down on a clear diagram
  • reinforce it with test questions
  • move the situation to a real Dnipro route
